“All that matters is that you are making something you love, to the best of your ability, here and now.” -Rick Rubin, The Creative Act: A Way of Being
Over the years I have taught many workshops to adults about various creative endeavors, usually involving actual art supplies. I've also participated in my fair share of such classes. I cannot tell you how many grown adults I have heard say out loud, “Oh, I am just not creative”.
I understand this is often said in reaction to the discomfort of learning a new skill, but lately I have been thinking about how it might also be a reflection of the narrowness of our cultural ideas about what creativity is.
So…what is creativity really? Is it the ability to draw, paint, act or sing? Sure those are few ways creativity shows itself…but it is not just happening in art.
I believe that creativity is the ability to take exactly what you have now and make something fresh out of it. I love the way creativity presumes enough-ness. Creativity asks us to work with what is right in front of us, right now.
Here are a few examples of how creativity has shown up for me in my everyday life recently:
Thought: Maybe someday I'll have an organized life. (Feels so heavy and impossible).
Creativity: I could organize my closet this afternoon in one hour and then I would be living my organized life. (I did this last week and now all my jeans are stacked neatly and my sweaters are lined up and it feels good).
Thought: I can call myself an artist when I have created a real collection of paintings. (Immediately I feel overwhelmed and shut down).
Creativity: I can call myself an artist now, even though I have a lot to learn about painting. (Hey, now I want to go make a painting!)
Thought: I am tired and cranky and nothing is working. (Ughhh!)
Creativity: Let's have a rest or take a break and begin again tomorrow. (The solution to so many of my ‘this is not working’ moments).
How do you find creativity shows up for you in your everyday life?
I believe Creativity is flexible, generous, abundant, loving, and that all humans have creativity in them. Creativity is always an option. The kind of coaching I practice is a process that supports you in brining forward your unique creativity and finding the solutions that are in congruence with your true nature.
with love,
