Decision Work
by Yuji Ueno, Ikebana The Zen Way of Flowers“When I was young, I was “harder” than I am now, and projecting myself onto flowers was not possible. I was not able to “layer” myself onto such a pretty existence as that of a flower. This made itself evident in my expression work; I was only able to project myself onto things such a rusted iron, aged metal and stone. As the years went by and I experienced setbacks, married and had a family, this changed and I became more empathetic towards flowers.
In hanaike [a style of arranging flowers], beauty is the axis or point on which we base various decisions. As mentioned previously, what kind of flowers, light, vessels, color and so on one chooses and how one combines them are decisions that must be made in each situation. Get rid of preconceived notions toward vessels and flowers and face them using only beauty and authenticity as decision points. Apart from that, it’s important to just take things as they come.”
Dear Friends,
I hope you will enjoy thinking about this quote as much as I have. Beauty and authenticity as decision points…taking things as they come.
The deep magenta peony flowers in my yard bloomed two weeks ago, with only two flowers. I enjoyed them in the yard for a day, then I put one in my kitchen and one in my daughters bathroom. Now I am waiting on the very fragrant and abundant white peony’s, which are always the last to flower.
grow slow,
