I’m currently working with a teacher who has prescribed 5 min a day in an art journal. Just 5 min of making art or, he suggests we think of it as “getting into action” on a page. This is about getting into the spirit of play, the way kids do with whatever is around.
I believe that creativity comes from the courageous exploration of the unknown. And right now, this tiny practice is such a great embodiment of that for me. My goal is just to show up and do my 5 minutes today, because it fills me up and brings me joy, and because it is fun!
The formula for this exploration is simple: think of something you enjoy, something that brings you alive & that you wish you spent more time doing, then make a commitment to yourself to find 5 min a day to do it!
Here are some other ideas I’d like to try out:
What if I quietly listened to my daughter or my husband for 5 min a day without interrupting or having any agenda?
What if I spent five minuets a day outside just taking in nature as it is?
What if I drank tea quietly for 5 min a day?
What if I wrote in a journal for 5 min a day?
What if I lay on the floor and stared at the ceiling for 5 min a day?
What if I listened to music that I love for 5 min a day?
What kind of practice would you love to try for 5 min a day?
xo,
Anna Marie
P.S. While I was researching the artist Eva Hesse, I found an inspiring short film about women making sculpture with everyday materials. My art school days were in the fibers department, so this kind of work is always on my radar. If you need an art boost check out this beautiful short video from the exhibition “Entangled: Threads & Making' Female Artists and Relationships with Material”.
What is your creativity calling you towards in this season of your life?

I love this idea of a 5 minute practice. For me it’d be quietly reading something nourishing. I’m trying to read more and scroll less so its a practice I want to build on.
