Last week I heard hope described as a dandelion growing in the cracked cement of a city sidewalk. I kept turning the image in my mind and finding it fit, which required me to think about what hope even is.
Which required me to think about what hope is not.
Hope is not about feeling happy all the time.
Hope is not about skipping over suffering.
Hope is not about turning away.
No.
Hope is acknowledging fear and sadness.
Hope is sitting in the seat right next to the heartache.
Hope is persistent.
Hope is a seed growing underground.
Hope is observing the seasons change.
Hope is a belief in the power of transformation.
Hope is watching the ocean pounding the shore, then glassy green again the next day.
Hope is a choice to trust in the benevolent universe even when the opposite seems to be louder.
I see hope in that dandelion that is getting ready to spring forward from the crack in the sidewalk in front of my house. Right now, it is alive under the cold hard concrete growing, changing, evolving, struggling to emerge and when it does it will not be shy. The dandelion will flourish with vivid green, vibrant yellow and it will likely invite its friends along.
